Join Us for Our Talk Ermine Street / Old North Road – Romans, Robbers, Railways and More!
Steve Owen will give an illustrated talk titled “Ermine Street / Old North Road – Romans, Robbers, Railways and More!”, exploring the rich and varied history of this important route. The talk looks at its development from ancient trackways through its Roman origins, its role in the coaching era, the impact of the railways, and local history across Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire.
Tracing the road from Bishopsgate in London through Royston, Caxton and Godmanchester towards York, the presentation will bring to life the journeys made along it — from Roman centurions marching north in AD43 to later travellers of the coaching age and beyond.
Bio: Steve Owen is Chairman of Longstowe History Society. He has amassed a remarkable collection of railway memorabilia, much of it relating directly to the ONR Station and brought back to its rightful home over the course of many years. He has also restored sections of track and installed a 1960’s carriage of a type many would remember from their younger travelling days.
