Anglesey Abbey, now cared for by the National Trust, was bought by Huttleston Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven, and his brother Henry in 1926. Lord Fairhaven went on to transform the former priory into an elegant country house, filling it with paintings, furniture, books, clocks and works of art, while creating the remarkable gardens and landscape around it.

Helen Ackroyd will explore the story of Lord Fairhaven, his life at Anglesey Abbey and the collections and gardens he created, as well as how the estate came to be left to the National Trust for future generations to enjoy.

Helen is a National Trust volunteer at Anglesey Abbey with a particular interest in Lord Fairhaven and the history of the house. Her knowledge of the estate and the people behind it brings a personal insight into one of Cambridgeshire’s best-known historic houses.
